Service 04 · Passive Fire Protection

Passive fire protection and fire stopping, UK wide

Fire stopping, cavity barriers, penetration seals and fire rated installations, installed to tested systems, labelled, photographed and recorded so the fire strategy holds up when someone checks it. The passive fire work is delivered through RWS Contracts Ltd, the group's IFC certificated fire division, so the rated walls RWS builds and the seals through them come from one company.

Every passive fire package, covered

04.1

Fire stopping

Compartment walls and floors sealed back to their rated line with batt, mastic, coated board, collars and wraps, installed within the manufacturer's tested scope for the substrate and the service.

04.2

Cavity barriers

Ceiling voids, raised floors and wall cavities divided on the lines the fire strategy shows, installed before the ceiling grid closes the void and photographed while there is still access.

04.3

Penetration and linear seals

Cable trays, pipes and ducts sealed where they pass through rated elements, and the linear gaps at heads of walls and slab edges closed with tested details.

04.4

Labelled and recorded

Every seal is labelled with the system, the rating and the date, photographed and logged against the drawings. The handover pack is the evidence building control and the building owner need.

Asked and answered

Are you third party certificated for fire stopping?

Yes. The passive fire work is carried out by RWS Contracts Ltd, the group's fire division, which is IFC certificated for fire stopping installation and a member of the Association for Specialist Fire Protection. Both companies share the same office and management team.

Why have the same contractor build the wall and seal it?

Because the rated line then has one point of responsibility. The partition is built to the tested system by the drylining team and the penetrations through it are sealed and recorded by the fire team, so there is no argument between two subcontractors about whose gap it is.

Do you provide a handover record?

Every seal is labelled, photographed and logged against its location on the drawings. The pack is issued at handover so building control, the fire engineer and the building owner have a record of what was installed, where and to which rating.

Can you carry out remedial fire stopping in an occupied building?

Yes. Remedial packages in schools, hospitals, offices and residential blocks are a regular part of the workload. We survey first, agree a schedule of remedials, then work in phases and out of hours where the building needs it.

Do you install fire doors?

Yes, through the fire division. Fire door sets are installed as complete assemblies, existing doors are inspected against their certification, and the remedials are carried out and recorded.
